The Phoenix was a sacred bird in Egyptian religion.  It probably never existed, but Herodotus reported that every 500 years it came to Egypt from Arabia.  It was said to look like an Eagle, and to have red and gold feathers.  The Phoenix was thought to live 500 years, and at the end of that time, would build itself a nest of herbs.  It would then fan it's golden wings and set the nest afire, burning itself to death.  A small worm found in the ashes would become the next Phoenix.
